ITIN NUMBER
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security number (SSN). ITINs are used to identify taxpayers who are required to file a U.S. tax return, but who are not eligible to obtain an SSN.
There are a number of reasons why someone might need an ITIN number. Some of the most common reasons include:
Nonresident aliens who are required to file a U.S. tax return.
Resident aliens who are not eligible to obtain an SSN.
Spouses and dependents of nonresident aliens who are required to file a U.S. tax return.
Foreign students who receive scholarships or other taxable income from U.S. sources.
To apply for an ITIN number, you must submit Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, to the IRS. You can submit Form W-7 by mail, in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, or through a designated acceptance agent.
